Two Fairmont State education programs nationally recognized

Students in class

Fairmont State University’s Bachelor of Arts in English Education and Master of Arts in English Education programs have been nationally recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

"We are incredibly honored to receive this prestigious recognition from the NCTE and CAEP. This distinction highlights the exceptional quality of our undergraduate and graduate English Education programs and reflects the dedication of our faculty and students,” said Dr. Amanda Metcalf, dean of the College of Education, Health & Human Performance. “Our English Education programs are designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage and inspire their students, fostering literacy and critical thinking in their future classrooms. This achievement reinforces our mission to advance excellence in teacher preparation and our commitment to shaping educators who will make a lasting impact.”

The NCTE is a professional organization focused on improving the teaching and learning of English and language arts at all levels. It advocates for literacy development and the use of language to shape personal and public experiences, promoting full participation in society through English and related disciplines.

CAEP is a professional accreditor for U.S. teacher education programs, committed to advancing equity and excellence in educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation. The organization ensures program quality and supports continuous improvement to enhance P-12 student learning.

The program review process involves over 100 trained reviewers, all of whom are members of NCTE and the English Language Arts Teacher Educators (ELATE).

This recognition from the NCTE and CAEP solidifies Fairmont State University’s standing as a leader in educator preparation. Being one of only nine institutions nationally recognized for the spring 2024 term showcases the exceptional quality of the English Education programs and highlights the university’s ongoing commitment to excellence in teacher preparation.
