Fairmont State Offers Two Free Events with World-Renowned Illusionist and Escape Artist Matt Johnson
Fairmont State University is excited to welcome internationally acclaimed illusionist and escape artist Matt Johnson as the featured guest of the Spring 2025 Presidential Speaker Series, Appalachian Resilience. With more than 30 years of experience, Johnson brings a powerful blend of spectacle and storytelling that reflects the very essence of resilience — the theme anchoring this semester’s series.
Best known for his daring escapes and emotional performances, Johnson has wowed global audiences on America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and The World’s Best, where he was named one of the top 50 acts worldwide. His unforgettable stunts, razor-sharp wit, and ability to connect deeply with audiences have earned him international recognition and praise, with Simon Cowell calling his act “simply brilliant.”
Johnson will appear on campus for two free events open to the public:

“Matt Johnson is more than a performer — he’s a storyteller who uses illusion to reveal deeper truths about the human experience,” said Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. “Although he is originally from the United Kingdom, his story of resilience resonates here in Appalachia. We’re honored that he will visit Fairmont to inspire as well as entertain our campus and community.”
