In October 2023, Fairmont State University partnered with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) to launch the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program, or POMP. The program guarantees Fairmont State students, who meet all program requirements, acceptance into WVSOM.

Fairmont State University’s Board of Governors held their bi-monthly meeting on October 23 at 9 a.m. in the Falcon Center Boardroom and virtually on Teams. Meeting highlights included Board approval of freezing in-state tuition and consolidating out-of-state rates for the 2025-2026 academic year, as well as approval of the 2025-2035 Strategic Vision. The Board also voted to advance the repeal of Policy 50, “Policy on Policies,” and its replacement, Policy 1.1, “Adoption, Amendment, or Repeal of BOG Policies,” to public comment.
The West Virginia Court Appointed Special Advocates (WV CASA), a non-profit organization that advocates for abused and neglected children in the state’s court system, held their annual Awards Gala on Oct. 5 at Stonewall Resort. Fairmont State University was honored with the Partner of the Year Award, recognizing Fairmont State’s work in support of WV’s children and families.
As part of the 2024 Homecoming celebrations, Fairmont State University will honor a new group of distinguished alumni award recipients at the Alumni Awards Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 4. The luncheon will be held at noon in Gym 1 of the Falcon Center.
Fairmont State University has been awarded $5,000 in grant funding from the EQT Foundation to upgrade existing on-campus food and hygiene support services for students.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host a special performance featuring roots musicians Annick Odom and Aristotle Jones, traditional "crankie" hand-cranked moving storytelling art, and a traditional music jam. Dr. M. Raymond Alvarez, professor of healthcare management at Fairmont State University, has been reappointed by Gov. Jim Justice to the West Virginia Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board. He was originally appointed in October of 2021 and his term will now extend until June 2029. This board plays a crucial role in ensuring that all nursing home administrators obtain their NHA (nursing home administrator) license to work in West Virginia nursing homes.
The Fairmont State Foundation today announced it received a $7,000 grant from Truist West Virginia Foundation to support a series of financial literacy seminars benefiting Fairmont State students and staff as well as the broader community.
Fairmont State University has received $5,000 through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) to organize a week-long series of events and activities celebrating the resilience and achievements of first-generation college students. More than 40 percent of students at Fairmont State are first-generation college students.
