Master of Arts in Teaching Impact

Master of Arts in Teaching

Join an extraordinary group of educators who are dedicated to improving lives and shaping the future through the transformative power of education.

Fairmont State's online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is ideal for those who already have a bachelor's degree or higher in liberal arts (e.g., English, Social Studies, Spanish), fine arts (e.g., Art), scientific fields (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, General Science), or health fields (e.g., Exercise Science) and are interested in becoming a licensed teacher. The online program is designed to ensure candidates have acquired the competencies and expertise to be effective educators. The program provides the professional education courses and clinical experiences - including full-time student teaching - necessary to prepare candidates for teaching in a specific content area in grades PreK-Adult, 5-Adult, or 9-Adult (see Specializations for a list of all certification options). An endorsement in Special Education may be added to the MAT degree after the initial license is earned.

For those candidates who have earned an undergraduate degree in a content area, all undergraduat coursework in the content area is waived, except for the methods course. For those candidates who have not earned an undergraduate degree in a content area, some additional undergraduate courses may be required for content area proficiency.

Mission

The mission of the Master of Arts in Teaching program is to prepare teacher candidates with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to meet West Virginia teaching licensure requirements and obtain teacher certification in comprehensive and secondary content areas. The MAT program will provide teacher candidates with an interdisciplinary curriculum and collaborative field experiences/clinical practice in order to assure a quality graduate for employability.
