On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host a special performance featuring roots musicians Annick Odom and Aristotle Jones, traditional "crankie" hand-cranked moving storytelling art, and a traditional music jam. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and is free and open to all community members.

Fairmont State University Abelina Suarez Professor of Chemistry Emerita and Campus Sustainability Consultant Dr. Erica Harvey was a panelist in the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Climate Crossroads Summit in Washington D.C. on July 16 and 17. Harvey was invited to share her perspective on working with students to engage local communities and improve campus sustainability. Mechanical Engineering major Eliza Keener (Sutton, WV) attended the Summit with Harvey, with encouragement by her internship employer for the summer, Schaeffler, a motion technology company.
Fairmont State University’s Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, Alicia Kalka has been named as one of Women We Admire’s Top 50 Women Leaders of West Virginia for 2024. Winning this award has put her in contention for Women We Admire’s National Award for Women Leaders in Education.
Fairmont State University’s Board of Governors held their bi-monthly meeting on August 28 at 9 a.m. in the Falcon Center Board Room. This was the first full Board meeting under the leadership of Chair Jennifer Kinty, Vice Chair Jason Pizatella, and Secretary Kevin Rogers. It was also the inaugural meeting for new Board members Drew Paton, Lance Puccio, and John Schirripa.

Dr. M. Raymond Alvarez, professor of healthcare management at Fairmont State University, has been reappointed by Gov. Jim Justice to the West Virginia Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board. He was originally appointed in October of 2021 and his term will now extend until June 2029. This board plays a crucial role in ensuring that all nursing home administrators obtain their NHA (nursing home administrator) license to work in West Virginia nursing homes.
The Fairmont State Foundation today announced it received a $7,000 grant from Truist West Virginia Foundation to support a series of financial literacy seminars benefiting Fairmont State students and staff as well as the broader community.
Fairmont State University has received $5,000 through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) to organize a week-long series of events and activities celebrating the resilience and achievements of first-generation college students. More than 40 percent of students at Fairmont State are first-generation college students.
On August 2, Fairmont State University’s Aviation Center of Excellence graduated their fourth class of United States Air Force Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps (AFJROTC) Flight Academy cadets. For the 4th consecutive year, cadets received a 100% FAA pass rate for their private pilot certifications in the program. The 2024 class comprised eight high school students and one college ROTC student from across the nation. These cadets were welcomed to campus in early June.
