Fairmont State University has received $5,000 through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) to organize a week-long series of events and activities celebrating the resilience and achievements of first-generation college students. More than 40 percent of students at Fairmont State are first-generation college students.
On August 2, Fairmont State University’s Aviation Center of Excellence graduated their fourth class of United States Air Force Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps (AFJROTC) Flight Academy cadets. For the 4th consecutive year, cadets received a 100% FAA pass rate for their private pilot certifications in the program. The 2024 class comprised eight high school students and one college ROTC student from across the nation. These cadets were welcomed to campus in early June.
Fairmont State University has received $2,000 through the West Virginia Humanities Council. This grant will be used to curate, promote, and actualize Sand and Fire: 200 Years of West Virginia Glass, a Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center exhibit highlighting how the glass industry led to significant economic development in West Virginia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
One of the most notable events at the Folklife Center is the Wartz ‘n All Dulcimer Jam, held twice a year. The next jam is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, beginning at 10 a.m. This free event is open to the public, inviting everyone to participate by playing or simply enjoying the music. New players can borrow cardboard dulcimers to join in the fun. The day will wrap-up around 3 p.m.

For the first time, Fairmont State University alumni, Fighting Falcons fans, employees and students who reside in West Virginia have an opportunity to pre-order a Fairmont State University specialty license plate. Preliminary interest applications are being accepted through December 31.

At many universities, students often spend their undergraduate careers dipping their toes into the world of academic research, with limited opportunities to present their findings before graduation. At Fairmont State, however, students can do research from day one, and many are given opportunities to present their findings alongside faculty experts at professional conferences around the world.
In October 2018, Victoria Grace was celebrated as the first woman to complete her Private Pilot Single Engine Land Rating through Fairmont State University’s flight program. Grace went on to be the first woman to graduate from the aviation program and then became their first female flight instructor.
Fairmont State University President Mike Davis has selected two new vice presidents to join his executive leadership team, marking a significant step for the institution. Now in the second year of presidency, Davis has set forward a bold vision to make Fairmont State a “Great Place to Learn, to Work, and to Call Home.” With these hires, he is expanding the team of experts that will turn this vision into reality.
Fairmont State University Biology student Dana Goodman (Man, WV) received the John C. Johnson Award at the Beta Beta Beta (Tribeta) Biological Honor Society 2024 National Convention in Columbus, GA.
Dr. Rebecca Giorcelli, Professor of Information Systems Management, has been honored with the Teaching Excellence Award and the Best of Regions Excellence Award for Region 2 of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
Fairmont State University received $6,890,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) through the offices of United States Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin. The funding will support upgrades to the nursing program facilities, renovations to the library, and improvements to campus security systems.
Fairmont State University received $4,980 in grant funding from the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program, an international science and education program focused on teaching and learning Earth System Science.
Fairmont State University’s Director of Student Health Chelsea Collins, APRN-FNP-C, was chosen as a recipient of The State Journal’s Generation Next: 40 under 40 award. Those selected are recognized as outstanding West Virginia professionals who have positively impacted their industries, fields, and communities. Collins was nominated for her notable contributions to student health at Fairmont State, and community efforts to promote wellness and mental health. Collins and the other finalists were honored at the Generation Next: 40 Under 40 award ceremony on June 19 at the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center in Clarksburg, W.VA.
