Fairmont State continues to enhance its academics with the appointment of a new Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Education
Fairmont State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mary Sortino as the Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Education. In this role, Dr. Sortino oversees the university's master’s and continuing education programs, guiding their development and ensuring their alignment with the university’s mission to provide high-quality education and foster strong community relationships.
President Mike Davis stated that "Dr. Sortino's impressive background and concrete results in higher education make her an excellent addition to the university. She brings extensive experience developing innovative academic programs and fostering student success." He added, "I am confident that under Mary’s leadership, Fairmont State will build on our reputation as a Great Place to Learn, strengthening the dynamic, career-focused graduate and professional programs that students can choose from."
Dr. Sortino will lead strategic initiatives to strengthen Fairmont State's graduate programs, with an initial focus on recruitment and retention. She will also work closely with the Graduate Studies Council to develop a three to five-year plan enhancing both graduate programs and professional education opportunities. Her leadership will be instrumental in positioning Fairmont State as a leading destination for graduate students seeking innovative and relevant educational opportunities.
Dr. Sortino previously served as the Dean of the School of Business and Education at Gwynedd Mercy University, where she spearheaded new academic initiatives and strengthened community partnerships. Additionally, she has held key roles including Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Gwynedd Mercy University, as well as Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at both Gwynedd Mercy University and Rosemont College. Her work has consistently resulted in increased enrollment and improved student retention.
In addition to her practical experience, Dr. Sortino holds a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology, a Master of Health Administration, and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Widener University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from West Chester University.
