Advisee Responsibilities

As a student, it is your responsibility to:

  •  make regular appointments with your advisor and seek help when needed
  • show up—on time—for all advising appointments
  • gather all decision-making information before appointments and be prepared for advising sessions (have a tentative schedule complete, check to ensure class sections are open, have a list of questions or concerns you want to discuss, etc.)
  •  discuss your long-range goals with your advisor
  • be able and willing to ask intelligent questions regarding your degree program
  • keep your advisor informed of changes in your schedule, academic problems, changes of major, minor, etc.
  • follow through on referrals
  • turn off all cell phones and attentively listen to the advisor
  • make final decisions about choices concerning academic matters
  • assume final responsibility for your decisions and academic choices

Advisor Responsibilities

As an advisor, it is your responsibility to:

  • assist students with clarifying life and career goals
  • help students develop educational plans that are compatible with their goals
  • discuss the advisee’s academic performance, and, if necessary, help the advisee formulate a plan to improve his/her academic standing
  • be knowledgeable about the programs in which you advise
  • be familiar with the published academic policies and regulations
  • provide accurate information to students
  • monitor the progress of advisees to ensure that they are satisfactorily completing all graduation requirements and successfully progressing toward a degree
  • refer the advisee to appropriate sources of information, assistance, and services when necessary
  • listen actively and empathetically
  • allow sufficient time for the advising appointment
  • communicate and emphasize the advisee’s responsibility for satisfying degree requirements
