Students earn Fairmont State scholarships during Science Showdown

Seniors from two winning teams, Jefferson High School (Shenandoah Junction, WV) and Parkersburg High School (Parkersburg, WV) each received a $1,000 Fairmont State scholarship in recognition of their accomplishments during Fairmont State University’s science showdown. Twelve teams of four students comprising juniors and seniors from seven area schools competed in a series of scientific challenges as part of the University’s Science Showdown on February 24. This is the second year in a row Fairmont State has hosted this event.

The future workforce of West Virginia will be on display at the SkillsUSA West Virginia Championship hosted at Fairmont State University Friday, March 22 – Saturday, March 23 in the Feaster Center. SkillsUSA aims to provide solutions to the current and future demand for a skilled workforce by preparing career and technical students for jobs available within the state.

Local High Schools Compete at Fairmont State in Regional Academic Showdown

Two teams have advanced from the 2024 Academic Showdown regional competition held at Fairmont State University on March 8. Grafton High School Team 1, Taylor County, placed first, and Bridgeport High School Team 2, Harrison County, placed second, earning both teams a spot in the finale on April 23, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.

During their February 15 meeting, Fairmont State University’s Board of Governors (BOG) approved planning for a new online criminal justice bachelor’s degree program, endorsed next steps to clarify policy review and creation, announced improved housing occupancy rates, and reported continued financial stability.

Fairmont State’s next Day of Giving takes place on February 29

Fairmont State University will host its fifth Falcon Day of Giving on Thursday, February 29 with a fundraising goal of $375,000. This 24-hour campaign aims to inspire Falcons to come together, show pride in their alma mater, and provide essential funding to support current and future students. Over 50 programs across campus, including academic units, athletic teams, student organizations, and student support initiatives will benefit from funds raised during this event.

Fairmont State’s Visit to State Capitol Sets Important Affairs in Motion

Fairmont State President Dr. Mike Davis and a delegation of students, faculty and staff visited the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston on January 29. During the visit House representatives, senators and even Governor Jim Justice met with those visiting from the University to discuss important initiatives Fairmont State is taking for students and the community. To commemorate the day, January 29, 2024 was officially recognized as Fairmont State University Day at the West Virginia Legislature by the House and Senate.

Fairmont State University Receives Funding through NASA IV&V ERC Partnership

Fairmont State University has received a grant totaling $2,548,265 over the next five years from the Katherine Johnson NASA Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) to extend the existence of the Education Resource Center (ERC). These funds represent the continuation of a collaborative relationship between the two agencies spanning over 20 years.

High achieving WV students encouraged to apply for presidential scholarship—Deadline Feb. 1

Each fall and winter, Fairmont State University offers West Virginia seniors an opportunity to apply for their premier academic scholarship, the Charles J. McClain Scholarship. Through a highly competitive process, twenty students will be invited to campus to compete for the scholarship. All applicants invited to campus will receive an academic scholarship, with three students being named McClain Scholars. McClain Scholars will receive tuition and fees, room and board for on-campus students, and a $500 per semester book scholarship for the on-campus Bound for Success Bookstore. The McClain Scholarship will cover up to four years (eight semesters) for the selected three students, estimated at approximately $80,000 per student.
