High achieving WV students encouraged to apply for presidential scholarship—Deadline Feb. 1
Each fall and winter, Fairmont State University offers West Virginia seniors an opportunity to apply for their premier academic scholarship, the Charles J. McClain Scholarship. Through a highly competitive process, twenty students will be invited to campus to compete for the scholarship. All applicants invited to campus will receive an academic scholarship, with three students being named McClain Scholars. McClain Scholars will receive tuition and fees, room and board for on-campus students, and a $500 per semester book scholarship for the on-campus Bound for Success Bookstore. The McClain Scholarship will cover up to four years (eight semesters) for the selected three students, estimated at approximately $80,000 per student.

McClain Presidential Scholarship provides West Virginia students who have excelled academically the opportunity to attend Fairmont State University at no cost,” said Fairmont State University Assistant Vice President for Student Success, Tresa Weimer. “Fairmont State University is pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to students who have made exceptional academic achievements.”
Eligible candidates must:
- Be a graduating senior from West Virginia
- Be a PROMISE Scholarship recipient.
- Promise recipients must have their FAFSA completed by May 1, 2024.
- Submit a completed Charles J. McClain Presidential Scholarship application and essay
- Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Have an ACT composite of 26 or higher or 1180 SAT total score
- Participate in on-campus interviews
All first-year recipients must maintain an overall GPA of a 2.75 at the end of their first year. An overall GPA of 3.0 is required for renewal during subsequent years. A minimum of 30 credit hours must be obtained each year of enrollment for renewal. The Charles J. McClain Presidential Scholarship and the McClain Finalist Scholarship can only be awarded up to eight semesters.
