The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host the inaugural West
Virginia Storytelling Guild Holiday Concert on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. The event
will be held at the Folklife Center, located on Squibb Wilson Boulevard on the Fairmont
State University campus.
The 90-minute storytelling concert will feature five storytellers: Judi Tarowsky of
Wheeling, Katie Ross of Ridgeley, June Riffle of Fairmont, Jo Ann Dadisman of Gladesville,
and Celia Douglass of Morgantown. Douglass will be joined by Morgantown musician Graham
Sterling, who will provide accompaniment on guitar and piano.
Light refreshments will follow the concert, which is open to all ages. A suggested
donation of $10 supports Folklife Center programming; however, donations are not required
for entry.
Storytelling, a longstanding traditional folk art, remains a vital part of West Virginia’s
cultural heritage. This holiday concert marks the first collaborative event of its
kind between the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and the Folklife Center. Both organizations
plan to establish the concert as an annual tradition, continuing their shared mission
to preserve and promote the state’s traditional arts.
“Tales help us connect to the past and connect to each other,” said Guild member and
retired educator Jo Ann Dadisman. “At events like these, we bring tradition to life
by telling old tales, creating new ones, and sharing our experiences and personalities.
That’s what we need during the holidays — to come together, celebrate, and share meaningful
experiences.”
The Folklife Center is fully accessible, with handicapped parking and an elevator
available. Reservations and advance tickets are not required.
