Fairmont State’s Board of Governors announces new officers and changes to membership

Rusty Hutson

Fairmont State’s Board of Governors oversees the operation of the best regional university in West Virginia. And the new fiscal year brings changes to Board leadership and membership. The institution’s vision, however, continues—to make Fairmont State University a “Great Place to Learn, to Work and to Call Home.”

As of July 1, three members of the Board concluded their service, including Chairman Rusty Hutson. “With my appointment ending here, the Governor has asked me to join the West Virginia University Board of Governors. The way we’ve handled challenges during my time on the Board brings me immense pride. Between COVID and the presidential search, this board is absolutely leaving the University in a better position."

Hutson also acknowledged longtime member Deborah Prezioso, who completed two four-year terms on the Board, and Jay Puccio who was first appointed in 2017.

In preparation for the new year, the Board elected Jennifer Kinty as Chair, Jason Pizatella as Vice Chair, and Kevin Rogers as Secretary.

"I am very proud to serve my alma mater as Chair of the Board of Governors,” said Kinty. “This is a pivotal time in higher education and the decisions we make are more important than ever. I look forward to meeting these challenges, planning for a bright future, and ensuring that Fairmont State remains the best regional university in West Virginia.”

To fill the board vacancies, Governor Jim Justice appointed three exceptional West Virginians—Drew Paton, Lance Puccio, and John Schirripa. The trio will attend their first full Board meeting on August 28.

At their most recent meeting in June, the Board approved a new graduate program, the Master of Science in Environmental Science, and online delivery of the existing Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. In addition, they approved a slate of annual academic program reviews.

The Board also approved the university’s Fiscal Year 2025 operating budget, which includes additional state funds appropriated during the May 2024 Special Legislative Session. Finally, they approved the capital project list for the new year, which includes 100+ projects totaling more than $4 million dollars.
