Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory is set in the early 20th century when radium (recently discovered) was marketed as a “miracle cure.” Radioactive Radium was from toothpaste to cancer treatments. The world became enamored by its green glow, and everyday products were dosed with the toxic element. Radium was used in watch dials until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.
Fairmont State is celebrating 100 years of the Masquers student theatre organization this year. In 1921, college theater took root at what was then known as Fairmont State Normal School. A faculty director was hired in 1923, and the Masquers were formed. The Masquers were charged with presenting a season of major productions for students and the public. Masquers has continued as the student theatre-producing organization at Fairmont State University. Its function is to support faculty-directed productions as well as student-driven projects. Each Masquers production features a cast, crew, and artistic team of students and professionals who commit their time, talent, and steadfast dedication to each performance.
The cast is comprised of Fairmont State students from various majors and two Fairmont State University faculty. The cast includes Miranda Folmsbee as Grace Fryer, Amelia Muter Tichnell as Kathryn Schaub, Catherine Gray as Irene Roudolph, and Tessa Jolly as Alma MacNeil, Fairmont State faculty, Professor of English, Jim Matthews (Arthur Roeder), and Professor of Chemistry, Matt Scanlon (Dr. Von Sochokey), Franky Satterfield (Edward Markley), Jarryd Powell (Charlie Lee), Kyle Matthews (Tom Kreider), Katie Scherzinger (Diane Roeder), Kat Lavender (Anna Fryer), Natalie Malone (Harriet Roeder), McKenna Galloway (Katherine Wiley), Colton Daft (Raymond Berry), Tanner Gatto (Dr. Joseph Knef), Julia Kirby (Dr. Marie Curie), Justin Allan (Frederick Flynn, Ph.D), Wesley Benson (Jack Youngwood), Olivia Short (Nancy Jane Harlan), Skylor Campbell, Darren Lanham, Seth M. Tichnell, Johnathan Richards, Haley Zoladz, Dalton Stanley, Mikayla Poole, and Brooke Williams.
“Kate Moore’s book, THE RADIUM GIRLS, is Fairmont State’s “common read” selection for this academic year.” Says Radium Girls Director Troy Snyder. “The issues the book raises are being discussed in science, occupational safety, literature, business, and healthcare classes across our campus. As a part of this event, we are proud to present D.W. Gregory’s play, RADIUM GIRLS, in the hope that it will inspire further conversation about the value of life, the double-edged swords of science and technology, and corporate accountability.” Snyder added, “I’m very proud of this cast, some of whom have very little stage experience, as they present a complicated and compelling story.”
