Fairmont State Athletics Shines in NCAA Division II Academic Success Rate Report
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its Academic Success
Rate (ASR) report for Division II Schools on Tuesday (Nov. 15). Several Fairmont State
Athletics teams turned in high academic marks from the NCAA's report.
The ASR indicates the percentage of freshman who entered and received athletics aid
during a given academic year, midyear transfers, and first-time freshman who did not
receive athletics aid but participated in athletics (i.e., walk-ons) who graduated
within six years. The ASR includes graduation from any institution. The report compiled
data from the 2015-16 cohort.
As a department, Fairmont State carried the fourth-highest academic success rate in
the Mountain East Conference. 74 percent of Fairmont State student-athletes graduated
within six years of stepping onto campus.
Three Fairmont State teams (softball, women's golf, and volleyball) achieved a 100
percent academic success rate in the report. The Fairmont State football team's academic
success rate of 58 percent was the highest mark in the MEC. The FSU baseball team
led the conference in both ASR (84 percent) and the Federal Graduation Rate (73 percent),
which only includes the incoming freshman class's graduation rate.
The men's cross country team's 83 percent ASR was the second-highest average in the
MEC, while the men's basketball team's 75 percent ASR and 53 percent FGR were both
the third-highest numbers in the conference. A trio of Fairmont State teams recorded
ASR digits above 80 percent: women's soccer (90 percent), women's cross country (82
percent), and women's basketball (80 percent).
