Fairmont State to host the inaugural NACADA WV drive-in
Fairmont State will host academic advisors from across West Virginia for the Inaugural National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) West Virginia Drive-In on March 6th at the Charles Pointe Center location.
Advisors from across the state will gather to have discussions centered on the theme “Advisors Take Action.” Breakout sessions on a range of topics will be discussed and will close with a student panel focusing on the needs of today’s West Virginian students. This event was organized by Fairmont State University’s Dedra Cobb, Director of the Academic Advising and Student Success Center in the College of Liberal Arts, and Jennifer Jones, Director of the Advising Center.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Corley F. Dennison III will serve as the keynote speaker. He has led the statewide effort to reform remedial education primarily through implementation of co-requisite delivery of college-level English and math. Results have been promising as state pass rates for math have increased 39 percent since 2014 while college level pass rates in the same period for English have increased 16.4 percent. He has delivered numerous presentations on co-requisite course delivery, student success and curricular reform at conferences and events across the country.
“Dedra Cobb and I are honored to offer this one-day professional development opportunity for our state. Academic advising is pivotal for academic success and persistence for our college students. It’s imperative that we provide training opportunities for staff and faculty advisors that is accessible and affordable,” Jones said. “Over 50 people have already registered to attend and we are looking forward to networking with advisors and administrators from other colleges and universities.”
