Unrequited Love, Desire, and a Seagull Land in Wallman Hall Theatre

Apr 22, 2019

The Fairmont State University Theatre Program is proud to present several performances of Anton Chekhov’s Seagull in a new translation by Charlotte Pyke, John Kerr, and Joseph Blatchley. The play is a slice-of-life tragicomedy which includes themes of unrequited love and loss of opportunities. While some characters desire love, others desire success and fame, yet no character seems to truly achieve happiness. Seagull will be performed in the Wallman Hall Theatre on the campus of Fairmont State on April 24, 25, 26, 27 at 7:30p.m. and on Sunday, April 28, at 2:00p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at (304)367-4240. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $8 for children 12 and under. Fairmont State students, faculty, and staff can reserve one complimentary ticket to the show.

Considered the first of his four major plays, Anton Chekhov’s Seagull, demonstrates a well-articulated balance between comedy and tragedy. Set on a Russian country estate, a passion for art, unrequited love, and seeking the value in one’s self unfolds on stage. The main characters, all artists in their chosen fields, have desired passions that they want to follow in life. The characters eventually go their separate ways, only to reunite two years later. When they reunite, the story takes a dark turn, and life for this family will never be the same. Egos, compromises, loss of opportunities, desire, and the clash between generations are portrayed within the play.

Seagull is directed by Dr. John O’Connor, Professor/Senior Level: Theatre Arts, with set design by Theatre Arts Professor Troy Snyder, assisted by Theatre Arts major Madeline Giambi, and lighting design by Professor Snyder. The costume design is by the ten students in Professor Snyder's Theatrical Design class, in fulfillment of a class project. Each student is designing costumes for one of the ten major characters in the play.

The cast of Seagull features Theatre Arts majors Justin Allan (Medvedenko), Seret Cole (Arkadina), Jason Englestad (Yakov), Miranda Folmsbee (Masha), Nathaniel George (Kostya), Sarah Hinerman (Nina), Kayla Saiz (Maid), Sean Shearer (Sorin), Riley Spears (Cook), Kyle Stemple (Trigorin), Robbie Stevens (Dorn), and Dino Vergura (Shamraev), and History major Juliana Spradling (Polina). Ms. Cole's performance partially fulfills the requirements for her Senior Comprehensive Project.

Seagull, performed at Fairmont State, is a theatrical experience that the community will not want to miss.
