Autism Awareness Month presentation to be held April 11

Apr 09, 2019

In celebration of Autism Awareness Month, Dr. Bonnie Henning, assistant professor of special education, will present a Brown Bag Lunch and Learn about Autism Awareness from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in Education 303.

The presentation will include a panel of students from the Autism Individualized Mentoring and Support Services (AIMSS) program in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance. The goal is to bring awareness to autism as part of the worldwide celebrated Autism Awareness Month.

“This is important because the number of people diagnosed with ASD is rising to the point that everyone will mostly likely work with, socialized with, or love someone with ASD,” Dr. Henning said. "With this being true it is important that everyone gains an understanding of ASD and how they can support individuals with ASD.”

She noted that there are simple things each person can do to change the world to accommodate the differences of those with ASD rather than trying to make them fit into the world.

"Students should come to understand their peers, family members, and future co-workers. Professors should come learn about how best to teach and interact with students who have ASD in their classrooms,” Dr. Henning said. "Staff should come to learn about individuals on campus with ASD and how they can best support them during their time here at Fairmont State. Students with ASD should come and be a part of the conversation."

Dr. Henning’s backing in teaching and education was focused on students with autism spectrum disorder. Sharing this knowledge with others allows them to become more educated and also gives them a chance to ask questions.
