Fairmont State student serves as intern to West Virginia Speaker of the House

Jan 25, 2019

Fairmont State University first-year student Ely Osborne has been chosen to intern for the Speaker of the House of Delegates, Roger Hanshaw, on Mondays and Fridays for the current legislative session.

Osborne, a political science and national security and intelligence double major, is grateful for the opportunity to continue his learning outside of the office and to build a network of professionals.

“I have a strong passion for public service and politics in general. I have known Speaker Hanshaw for years and he has a been model in my community that I have looked up to,” he said.  "So, when he was elected Speaker I could not pass on the opportunity.”

The experience will offer a chance to gain more knowledge and insight on how politics are run from the inside as well as why the legislature works the way it does. Osborne will be working with Speaker Hanshaw.

“I hope to leave this opportunity with a better understanding of our state government and the political process in general,” he said. “This is just the beginning and I look forward to seeing what opportunities stem from this internship. I thank God for the opportunity and hope more doors like this continue to open.”

Osborne is in the Honors Program, a member of the College Republicans and active in Chi Alpha Campus Ministries.
