Fairmont State Athletics place fifth in MEC standings

Fairmont State University Athletics wrapped up the 2017-18 season with a fifth-place finish in the Mountain East Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for the second-straight year. The fifth-place finishes in 2016-17 and 2017-18 mark the highest finishes for Fairmont State in the five-year history of the league.

The MEC Commissioner’s Cup measures overall athletic excellence among its membership based on each sponsored sports finish in the MEC standings.

Fairmont State had three programs reach NCAA regional competition this season; including men’s tennis, women’s cross country and women’s swimming. In addition, the women’s swimming team took home the inaugural MEC championship this winter and the men’s swimming, football and men’s tennis teams turned in runner-up finishes in the MEC regular season standings.

“We are extremely proud of the consistent growth in athletic success at Fairmont State since joining the Mountain East Conference five years ago," said Acting Director of Athletics Chad Fowler. “Our goal is to compete on a regional and national level in each of our sports, and finishing in the top five of the Commissioner’s Cup standings shows the hard work and dedication that our donors, administrators, coaches and student-athletes are providing both on and off the field.” 

The University of Charleston, Shepherd, West Virginia Wesleyan, Wheeling Jesuit and Fairmont State finished in the top five of this year’s standings, with three of the five being private institutions. Shepherd and Fairmont State are both West Virginia public institutions.

The University of Charleston has won the 2017-18 Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup for the third time in the five-year history of the league.

The MEC Commissioner’s Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution).

Eleven of the 12 schools in the league won a regular season or tournament championship in 2017-18.
