Bob Cable Inducted Into MAATA Hall of Fame
Fairmont State Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine & Game Day Management, Bob Cable, was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association (MAATA) Hall of
Fame on Saturday, May 19 at the Princess Royale Oceanfront Hotel in Ocean City, Md.
Cable was one of five hall of fame inductees for 2018.
"There is no one in the country that is more deserving of this honor," said Fairmont
State Acting Director of Athletics Chad Fowler. "Bob is a leader in the athletic training community and contributes to his profession
in many ways."
"However, his biggest impact is right here at Fairmont State, as her serves each of
Fairmont State's athletes and programs as well as anyone in the country. Bob is a
valuable part of our athletic department, both as an athletic trainer, and as an administrator."
In his 28th year at Fairmont State, Cable heads an athletic training department that is widely
regarded among the best in the conference, region and country. Cable and his staff
serve over 300 student-athletes that compete in one of Fairmont State's 16 NCAA Division
II athletic programs.
Cable is also heavily involved within the athletic training community both regionally
and nationally and has earned various accolades for his efforts. He was named NCAA
Division II Trainer of the Year in the summer of 2010 by the National Athletic Trainers
Association (NATA). The honor recognizes the outstanding efforts of a certified athletic
trainer employed in a collegiate setting at a Division II school. The NATA selected
Cable on the merits of his active community and campus involvement; volunteer service;
national, district and state athletic training participation; promotion of the profession;
and exceptional performance in the role of collegiate athletic trainer. Cable currently
serves on the committee that elects the presidents of the NATA.
In May 2015, Cable was honored by the MAATA by earning their service award. The MAATA
Athletic Trainer Service Award is a prestigious honor that recognizes qualified MAATA
members for their contributions to the athletic training profession.
Cable currently serves as the treasurer of the MAATA and is a member of the NATA District
3 Board of Directors. He has also served the West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association
(WVATA) in numerous capacities throughout his career, and is currently the president
of that group.
In 2007, he was named the WVATA "Trainer of the Year" for his willingness to go "above
and beyond the normal call of duty."
Cable is also currently serving as the chair of the Mountain East Conference Athletic
Training Committee.
Cable is married to the former Jill Hinkle and they are the parents of two grown children,
Courtney and Jonathan.
