Greek Week Includes Shackathon Fundraiser and Greek Sing

Students participating in Greek Life at Fairmont State University are raising money this week to support the Class of 2016 Senior Project, funding a Veterans Memorial Plaza on campus.

Student Activities Director Jackie Inskeep said as part of Greek Week this week that sororities and fraternities are hosting a Shackathon to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and to raise money for the senior class gift. On Sunday, April 17, students got together to build cardboard shacks in the quad in front of the Falcon Center. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, April 18, and Tuesday, April 19, at least three students must stay with each shack.

“We helped build a shack and we’re also selling hot dogs to raise money,” said Jacob Nelson of Charleston, a TBI member and a senior Business and Sports Management major. “We’re coming up with other ideas just to raise money and help out. I think it’s good because it goes to the memorial, and I think it’s awesome that the school is doing that and recognizing people who are that brave. I also think it’s good because we’re local and we like giving back to the community so it’s good for us. And also I graduate this semester so it goes toward my senior class too.”

Kayla Ferrell of Leesburg, Va., a Delta Zeta member and a senior Criminal Justice major, said her chapter is very interested in community service opportunities.

“Our shack is the one on the very end with red, white and blue pillars. Our philanthropy for the event has been ‘paint a turtle’ because one of our big philanthropies nationally is the Painted Turtle camp and our mascot is a turtle. I’m a senior so I’m a really big advocate for the senior project, and I know that Fairmont State is very big on nontraditional students and veterans, so I think it’s a really cool idea that we’re giving back to them and we’re making this memorial for them.”

Greek Sing with the theme “Red, Blue and Greek” is another Greek Week tradition. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in Colebank Hall.
