School of Fine Arts Hosts Benefit Performance of "Hyena"

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts is hosting a benefit performance of alumnus Christian Cox’s short, one-act play “Hyena,” produced by M.T. Pockets Theatre. Cox is the Youth Services Librarian for the Fairmont branch of the Marion County Public Library and a graduate of the FSU Communication and Theatre program.

The benefit performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in Wallman Hall Theatre, followed by a Playwright Talkback at 8:45 p.m. Tickets are not required but donations will be accepted. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit M.T. Pockets Theatre.

An M.T. Pockets press release describes the play: “Who do you seek solace with when you feel there isn't anyone who will listen? Julie is a young girl who likes to visit the zoo. She has many animal friends there, but seeks comfort with one particular animal, the Hyena. Through her confessions and discussion with the scavenger, we discover Julie has a terrible home life full of abuse. She plays out the possible scenarios of the burdens she bares in heart-touching dialogue to the mixed reactions of the Hyena. By the end, the comparison of the caged animals versus the ‘un-caged’ animals leave the audience with thought compelling conflict.”

The production was chosen to represent West Virginia in the Southeastern Theatre Conference Community Theatre Festival in March 2015.
