"Appalachian Inspired" Exhibit Opens May 22

May 05, 2015

The final gallery exhibition of the 2014-2015 academic year at Fairmont State University will feature the work of Andrew Thorne.

Thorne’s solo exhibition, “Appalachia Inspired,” opens Friday, May 22, in the J.D. Brooks Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Wallman Hall. The exhibit will close Wednesday, June 10, with a reception at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call (304) 367-4219.

Thorne creates figurative sculpture that celebrates the strength and diversity of the Appalachian spirit, and his goal is to create interesting and inspiring characters that are directly connected to the rich culture and heritage of West Virginia.

The artist states: “For me inspiration is found around every corner. The beauty and realism of the Appalachian region provides powerful imagery for me to draw upon in my work.  During my undergraduate program, I spent an ample amount of time traveling between Europe and Asia and explored the art from these inspiring cultures. As a sculptor I am constantly in awe by the figurative work produced during the Italian Renaissance, such as the work by Lorenzo Bernini and the Buddhist sculpture that surrounds the various Asian temples. I also find a great deal of inspiration from my family. These experiences inevitably show through in my work by meshing a classical sculpture feel with historical West Virginian themes.”
