Speaker to Discuss "The Price of Justice" with Classes

Feb 23, 2015

Guest speaker Bruce Stanley will talk with classes at Fairmont State University about his 14-year fight to challenge the power of A.T. Massey Coal Co. and its CEO, Don Blankenship, according to Dr. Gregory T. Hinton.

Stanley will speak to Dr. Charles Shield’s students in CRIM 3399, Crime and Justice in West Virginia, and to Dr. Robert Mild’s students in COMM 2219, Language in Communication, on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 1:30 p.m. in Hardway Hall Room 128. He will talk with Dr. Craig White’s students in SOCY 2200, Social Problems, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. in Hardway Hall Room 128.

Bruce Stanley, born and raised in rural West Virginia, graduated from West Virginia University College of Arts and Sciences and from the West Virginia University College of Law. While he was attending West Virginia University, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the West Virginia Law Review. His work has been committed to West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Before opening his own law firm, he partnered at Reed Smith LLP.

Caperton v. Massey, one of Stanley’s high profile cases, is discussed in Laurence Leamer’s “The Price of Justice.” In this case, the United States Supreme Court ruled that under the Fourteenth Amendment, Justice Brent Benjamin should have recused himself when Hugh Caperton’s suit against A.T. Massey came before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

Leamer’s non-fiction book details story of Stanley’s work with Dave Fawcett on behalf of Caperton and his work with Tonya Hatfield to win settlements for widows of men killed in Massey mines. “The Price of Justice” is Fairmont State University’s Common Read for the 2014-2015 academic year. Leamer will visit campus for a public presentation on March 24.

Stanley’s other notable achievements include being a Public Justice’s Trial Lawyer of the Year Award finalist, a member of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County and listed on The Best Lawyers in America in the area of commercial litigation.
