The author of Fairmont State University’s Common Read for the 2014-2015 academic year, “The Price of Justice: A True Story of Greed and Corruption,” will speak on campus on Tuesday, March 24.

Author George Prochnik to Speak on Campus Feb. 18

The Fairmont State University Common Book Committee announced in the fall of 2013 that the Common Book title for the 2013-2014 academic year is George Prochnik’s “In Pursuit of Silence: Listening for Meaning in a World of Noise.”

Prochnik will speak about his book at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Colebank Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Fairmont State Collegiate Singers and the Fairmont State Chamber Choir will present a concert titled “Frankenstein, Frank N. Furter and Friends” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Wallman Hall Theatre.

Directed by Dr. Sam Spears with John Morrison as accompanist, the concert ties into the celebration of Halloween and the 2012-2013 Fairmont State University Common Reader project.

"Frankenstein" Selected as Common Reader for 2012-2013

Although Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” was first published in 1818 when she was 21, the novel’s content remains relevant to audiences today. For that reason, “Frankenstein” has been chosen as the Common Reader for the 2012-2013 academic year at Fairmont State University. The project will be complemented by a Frankenstein Film Festival and other events throughout the year.

A concert by the Collegiate Singers and Chamber Choir will explore music historically and thematically related to the book selected for Fairmont State University’s 2011-2012 Common Reader project, “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks.  

Author Rebecca Skloot's Lecture Rescheduled for May 2

As part of the Celebration of Ideas Lecture Series and as the culmination of the Common Reading Project for 2010-2011, author Rebecca Skloot will speak on campus about her book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” Skloot will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, in Colebank Hall. This lecture was originally scheduled for April 18, but was rescheduled by the author. Admission is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
