Written in 1991, “I Hate Hamlet” follows Andrew Rally, an actor fresh from the starring role of a hit TV show who decides to prove his acting chops by accepting the lead in a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in New York City’s Central Park. Caught in a conflict between his integrity and his need to make money, Rally struggles with the lure of L.A. and its modern glamour and agonizes over the glory of taking on the “greatest play in the English-speaking world.” His reluctance to perform even evokes the appearance of the ghost of the legendary John Barrymore.
The cast includes Gary Hayes as Andrew Rally; Anthony Edmond as John Barrymore; Jackie Jelacic as Andrew’s girlfriend Deirdre McDavey; Bailey Kershner as Andrew’s agent Lillian Troy; Stephen Phillips as Andrew’s L.A. producer Gary Peter Lefkowitz; and Madison Whiting as Andrew’s realtor Felicia Dantine.
