Family Weekend Helps Share the College Experience

Sep 11, 2014

Family Weekend offers Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students and their families an opportunity to spend quality time together and share the college experience.

Sponsored by the Office of Retention, the event on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 19 to 21, includes activities and meals, as well as Septemberfest in downtown Fairmont. Family Weekend is free for those who register, and some meals are included. (Families will be on their own for dinner on Sept. 20 but can purchase food at Septemberfest or in the Falcon Center Dining Hall.)

“After the first few weeks of the fall semester, Family Weekend gives parents and families a chance to check in on their students and to see firsthand what their college experience is like. The event combines information on student services with fun, family-friendly activities. We encourage the families of our students to visit throughout the academic year and to get to know us and what this unique environment provides,” said Charlie Watson, Retention Program Coordinator. “It is important to our institutions to engage and build relationships with the family members of our students because they are our students’ greatest advocates and supporters.”

The event kicks off Friday, Sept. 19, with event check-in at 2 p.m. in the Falcon Center first floor lobby. From 2 to 6 p.m., tours of campus are available upon request. A Support Services Open House starts at 2:30 p.m. and highlights the following: Ruth Ann Musick Library, FSU Tutoring Services, Pierpont Math/Writing Tutoring Center, Career Development Center, Counseling Services, Student Health Center, FSU Writing Center. Dinner will be provided in the Falcon Center Dining Hall from 4:30 to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m., families will able to screen “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and enjoy appetizers and ice cream in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms.

Saturday’s schedule includes a tailgate party beginning at 11 a.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field that will feature lawn games, a caricature artist, old-time photos, a create-your-own stadium seat station, a postcard booth, a kids’ art studio and more. Lunch and game tickets are provided for those registered for Family Weekend. The Fighting Falcons take on Glenville State at 1 p.m. After the game, the Office of Retention is hosting a Fifth Quarter Post-Game Reception and Student Success Showcase at the Ruth Ann Musick Library.

Septemberfest begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, on Monroe Street in downtown Fairmont. A bus will be provided to take families downtown who would like to attend. For more information about Septemberfest, click here.

The event concludes on Sunday, Sept. 21, with worship opportunities and information and a closing brunch.
