FSU and WVDOC Host Paws4People Service Dog Public Access Training

In collaboration with the West Virginia Division of Corrections, Fairmont State University is hosting a paws4people foundation Service Dog Public Access Training and Certification Seminar in May.

Providing training on the topic of service dogs performing in public, the professional workshop will take place Monday, May 19, through Friday, May 23, on the FSU main campus in Fairmont.

Faculty from the paws4people foundation scheduled to attend are Kyria Henry, Chief Executive Officer; Terry Henry, Chief Operating Officer; Cece Miller, Director paws4prisons ADTP; Danielle McPhail, Senior Trainer; and Caroline Salevan, Trainer.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to handle a service dog in training, as well as interact with clients who are working toward receiving Service Dog Public Access Certification with their own service dog partner. In addition, paws4prisons teams from West Virginia Division of Corrections (WVDOC) facilities will attend to observe, train and interact with the paws4people staff and clients.

Through a partnership between paws4people, the Marion County Humane Society and Pruntytown Correctional Center, Fairmont State already serves as a training location to help shelter dogs become service dogs.

“Fairmont State University is providing the venue for the socialization here because the campus community is like a small city. With dining, lots of activity, large athletic events, this is a great venue for training for the dogs,” said FSU President Maria Rose. “The University is proud to participate in this program.”
