Theatre Student Selected for Disney College Internship
A Fairmont State University student has been selected for an internship under the Disney College Program.
Erika A. Johnson, a junior at Fairmont State and a member of the Honors Program, is majoring in Theatre. The internship runs from Aug. 1, 2014, through Jan. 7, 2015. As part of the internship, Johnson will complete a three-credit class along with work in the Costuming Department.
A native of Maryland, Johnson said this opportunity is a dream coming true. She attributed her work as a Resident Assistant (RA) and a hall monitor on campus as a contributing factor in her selection for the internship. She has been sewing for about seven years and wants to own a costume shop after she graduates.
“I am really pleased that Erika is taking this kind of risk and stretching beyond her traditional education. Our hope for her is that when she comes back to Fairmont State, she will bring with her and energy and a new vision for her work in theatre,” said Dr. Francene Kirk, Abelina Suarez Professor of Communication and Theatre Arts.
Applications from all over the nation were accepted for this opportunity that allows students to gain work experience along with college credit. This unique educational opportunity offered by Disney World was established with a goal to help students take part in personal and career development classes and build problem-solving skills, teamwork, guest service and effective communication skills. The selection decision is made based on an online and a phone interview.
In the past, Anthony Errigo, also, an RA and Assistant Residence Director, a Fairmont State graduate, received the internship under the Disney College Program. Errigo also was a member of the University’s Honors Program.
