Civil Engineering Student Awarded Scholarship

A Fairmont State University student was among three Civil Engineering students awarded scholarships by the North Central West Virginia Section of The American Society of Highway Engineers.

At its annual Commissioners Banquet held on April 2 at the Bridgeport Conference Center, WVDOT Secretary/Commissioner of Transportation Paul Mattox presented $1,500 scholarships to George Lynch of Fairmont State and to Brandon LeRoy and Guadalupe Leon, both of West Virginia University.

The applicants were judged based on the following criteria: desire to work in the engineering/construction industry, previous work experience, academic performance, instructor recommendation and extracurricular activities.

A native of Greenbrier County, George Lynch is a junior at Fairmont State majoring in Civil Engineering Technology. He maintains a cumulative 3.05 GPA and has worked in the construction field since the age of 16.

“My goal since I was a young child was to work in the construction field as a Civil Engineer,” Lynch said. “I understand the importance of doing the job to the best of your ability and in a timely manner.” 

At the event, Lynch expressed his thanks for being selected as a scholarship recipient and said he plans to use the scholarship funds to help pay for his education. After graduation, his goal is to work on a highway crew as the Civil Engineer.
