The Fairmont State University 2014 Student Juried Exhibition runs through Friday, April 25, in the J.D. Brooks Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Wallman Hall.
Gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The Department of Art will host a public reception from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. For more information, call (304) 367-4219. The exhibit will include works of art submitted to the jury process by FSU students. This year’s exhibition has been juried by Derek Reese of the internationally renowned Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art in Pittsburgh.
Fairmont State students selected by Reese include Nicole Alexander of Terra Alta; Becka Efaw of Rivesville; Elizabeth Dang of Dubois, Pa.; Kylie Ford of Salem; Lucas Garrett of Camden; Hannah Lenhart of Fairmont; Erin McDaniel of Bridgeport; Erin McKown of Ravenswood; Scarlett Mowery of Morgantown; Travis Pudder of Kelly Town; Tiffany Richards of Albright; Brigette Satterfield of Fairmont; Christopher Schultz of Bridgeport; Loraine Smith of Clarksburg; Elizabeth Sorensen of Clarksburg; and Ashley Yoho of New Martinsville.
Born in Morgantown, Reese is interested in a post-disciplinary approach to painting that involves an exploration of various media with painting as a jump off point. Reese’s own artwork explores personal identity through materials and imagery inspired by his childhood home, the Appalachian region and “blue collar-ism.” Reese received his BFA from West Virginia University and completed an MFA from Ohio State University. He has worked as an adjunct professor for FSU but moved to Pittsburgh in 2011 to act as lead educator at the Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art. Reese exhibits his artwork nationally, and he has given guest artist lectures at Carnegie Mellon University and Penn State University. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Pittsburgh Pop-Up Grant creating installations in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, fusing visual art and music in collaboration with Pittsburgh’s Freya String Quartet. Currently, Reese is a 2014 fellow at Flight School, the professional development program for Pittsburgh artists at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
