Learn to Ski or Snowboard through Class at Wisp Resort

Jan 14, 2013

The Outdoor Recreation Leadership program, Outdoor Adventure Club and Wisp Resort are collaborating to provide students at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College an opportunity to learn how to downhill ski or snowboard.

Ski and Snowboard College consists of four weekly lessons taught by Dennis and Sherry Mitchell, who are FSU employees and also Certified Professional Ski Instructors through the Professional Ski Instructors of America. The classes are open to beginner and intermediate skiers/snowboarders ages 8 and older. The lessons are open FSU and Pierpont students, as well as the public. A $40 registration fee should be paid to the Outdoor Adventure Club. An additional $29 should be paid to Wisp Resort for equipment rental and a lift ticket for each class. Students can use the equipment before and after the class from 4 to 9 p.m. on each class day.

Students have the choice of Wednesday or Thursday evening classes. The orientation/introductory lesson will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, or Thursday, Jan. 17, in Room 305 of the Engineering Technology building on the shared main campus of FSU and Pierpont. This lesson will cover equipment and use, safety on the slopes, proper clothing, techniques and some drills. The other three classes will take place at Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake, Md. Participants may choose to have lessons on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday lesson dates will be Jan. 23 and 30 and Feb. 6. Thursday lesson dates will be Jan. 24 and 31 and Feb. 7. Transportation to and from Wisp Resort is the student’s responsibility.
