Kestrel to Host Readings by Visiting Writers

Kestrel, Fairmont State University’s Journal of Literature and Art, will celebrate the publication of issue 28 on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29, with readings by 10 visiting writers.

Admission to the Kestrel events is free and open to the public.

From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, there will be a reception and readings by writers Jan Beatty, Ray Keifetz, Dean Rader, David Salner and Carrie Shipers at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center.

“We deeply appreciate the support for Kestrel and the celebration by a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council and by a donation from Joe Romeo’s I-79 Honda/Mazda. Their contributions allow us to bring to Fairmont State top-notch writers and artists with whom our students and the Fairmont community can share their love of literature and art,” said Donna J. Long, Professor of English and Kestrel’s Editor-in-Chief.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, readings by Anne Brannen, Gaylord Brewer, Nina Forsythe, Katie Kingston and Jenna Morgan will take place at C.J. Maggie’s restaurant located at 207 Jefferson Street in downtown Fairmont. Both events are free and open to the public. Books by visiting writers will be for sale at the readings.

“The celebrations are a way to build on the print journal’s mission, which is to bring together diverse voices in order to discover and nourish literary and artistic endeavor,” Long said.

Kestrel was founded in 1993 and since 2009 has been edited by Long, Elizabeth Savage, Suzanne Heagy and Marian Hollinger. FSU student internships are available with Kestrel.
