On their shared main campus, Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will host the Marion County Relay for Life on Friday, June 8.
“Fairmont State University is proud to partner with Pierpont Community & Technical College to host this important Marion County event. Relay for Life is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate all those who have battled cancer and to remember lost loved ones. Supporting the American Cancer Society is a positive way to fight back against cancer. Relay for Life is a time for fun and fellowship for a worthy cause,” said FSU President Maria Rose.
Relay for Life is the world’s largest movement to end cancer. Community-based Relay for Life events raise funds and awareness to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.
Marion County Relay for Life begins with an opening ceremony and survivor’s walk at 6 p.m. Each participating Relay for Life team will have booths with different activities, from food sales to games. There will be a café area with food. At dark, the luminaries will be lit in memory of those who have fought against cancer. At about 9:30 p.m., there will be a fireworks display.
Patti Murray-Fidura has served as captain for the FSU Relay Team this year. She encourages all to stop by the team’s table at Relay. In honor of the “Superheroes of Cancer” theme for this year’s event, Murray-Fidura crafted a special Falcon-themed cape and spirit stick.
“We are going to have a claw arcade game, a fishing game, raffle baskets, jewelry, a bean bag game and more,” she said. “With fundraisers throughout the year, our team has raised $3,200 so far. Thanks to all who have contributed.”
