Residence Life Staff Members Participate in Habitat for Humanity Build

Resident Assistant staff members in the Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College Office of Residence Life participated in a work day for Marion County Habitat for Humanity on January 13, 2011, as part of their training and team building. 

The 28 RAs and four Residence Directors assisted with the building of a house on Palatine Avenue in East Fairmont for a mother and daughter. They primarily helped to install electrical wiring for the home.

The Habitat for Humanity personnel were so happy with the work done by RAs and RDs that they told the staff that they were welcome to come back any time. An RA from Prichard Hall is planning to help Habitat with another build this semester.

This service project is part of a “Community Service” theme this year for the RA staff who are shifting their focus from planning social events on campus for residents to planning projects for others off campus—especially in the community of Fairmont. The shift in focus is intended to build the connection between FSU and Pierpont and the community. Participating in service also helps build the staff team and provides its members with sense of accomplishment. Through their service, the RAs also become role models to other students by demonstrating what it means to be an active member of the community. FSU and Pierpont students see themselves as an integral part of the community and desire to play an active role in improving the community in which they live.
