Mountain State Storytelling Institute on Campus March 26-27

Feb 18, 2010

Genealogy, ghosts and stories from around the world will come to life at the 2010 Mountain State Storytelling Institute: Story Expeditions, West Virginia and the World at Fairmont State University in March.

The event will take place on March 26 and 27, 2010, in the third floor conference center located in the Falcon Center on the FSU main campus. The Institute is hosted by the FSU School of Fine Arts in partnership with the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center and the West Virginia Storytelling Guild. The Institute is funded by a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council.

Filled with workshops, speakers and storytelling, the two-day event is geared toward teachers, college students, clergy, librarians and amateur storytellers. It features nationally known storyteller, author and five-time West Virginia Liar's Contest Champion Bil Lepp and storytelling scholar Dr. Caren Neile, director of the South Florida Storytelling Project at Florida Atlanta University. Lepp and Neile will be joined by faculty and student presenters from FSU and West Virginia University and by tellers from the West Virginia Storytelling Guild.

The registration fee for the Institute is $50 for adults and $20 for students. The cost includes all of the events, afternoon refreshments and a continental breakfast on Saturday, March 27. For additional information or to register, contact Susan Bailey at (304) 367-4203 or sbailey@fairmontstate.edu. Registration is limited to 100 participants. A storytelling performance planned for Friday, March 26, in the Turley Center at 7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public.
