3 Named First FSU Board of Governors Scholars

Apr 22, 2009

Three West Virginia high school seniors have been named the first recipients of Fairmont State University's Board of Governors Scholarship.

The following students have been selected as scholarship winners:

  • Kitty Dixon, the daughter of Ray Louis and Carol R. Dixon of Farmington, is a student at North Marion High School in Marion County. She intends to major in art education at FSU.
  • Crystal Omregcik, the daughter of David and Margaret Omregcik of Cameron, is a student at Cameron High School in Marshall County. She intends to major in accounting at FSU.
  • Garrett Sausen, the son of John R. and Anne M. Sausen of Independence, is a student at Preston High School in Preston County. He intends to major in business administration at FSU.

"More than 50 top flight West Virginia high school seniors from 24 of West Virginia's 55 counties applied for the first full-ride scholarship to be offered by the Board of Governors, said Charles J. McClain, FSU Interim President. "All of the applicants are winners, and three have been awarded the scholarship. We are enormously delighted with both the selection process and the results and congratulate Ms. Dixon, Ms. Omregcik, and Mr. Sausen. Welcome to Fairmont State University."

The new competitive, full-ride scholarship covers tuition and fees, room and board and a $1,000 textbook stipend. The three scholarship winners will be honored at the FSU Academic Awards Celebration, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the Colebank Hall gym.

"We were pleased with the response to this new opportunity and the academic quality of all the scholarship applicants," said Steve Leadman, Director of Admissions and Recruitment. "We would like to offer thanks to all who participated in the process."

To qualify, students must be current high school seniors who live in West Virginia. Students must have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 and an ACT composite of 26 or SAT composite of 1190. They must be PROMISE Scholarship recipients.

Board of Governors Scholars were chosen based on their academic qualifications, community service activities, leadership involvement, a personal essay, admissions counselor recommendation and personal interview. Students who receive the Scholarship must maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA and must maintain their PROMISE Scholarship eligibility. FSU awards are renewable for three years.
