Community Foundation Awards Two Scholarships
The Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia has awarded scholarships to
two Fairmont State University students.
The Charlotte and Mary Gail Koen Scholarships were awarded to Robert Thomas Pickett,
son of Lynne Pickett of Mannington, and Brandon Riggs, son of Chuck and Gladys Riggs
of Metz. Each will receive $2,000 this year and will be eligible to continue receiving
scholarship assistance based on their grade point averages.
Pickett is enrolled at FSU, where he is pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Riggs
plans to attend FSU and major in biology and hopes to attend medical school in the
future.
The Koen Scholarship is named for sisters Charlotte and Mary Gail Koen, who grew
up in Mannington and attended Mannington High School. Funds were donated by their
cousin, Bill Block of Arkansas, and his family. The scholarship provides assistance
to worthy Mannington-area students who want to pursue post-graduate training in vocational
or technical fields. Students are selected by the North Marion Foundation in consultation
with the Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia, which manages the endowment
and administers grants on an annual basis.
