Whetstone Evening Planned for May 1
Thirty-five students, faculty, staff, alumni, community writers and artists in a variety
of media have contributed to Whetstone 27, the 27th edition of Fairmont State University's
art and literary journal produced through the Department of Language & Literature.
Student editors select the works to be included in the journal and design the book.
Donnie Tucker is managing editor; Kristin Scharnhorst is literary editor; Jess Allen
is art editor; and Scott Scharnhorst is design editor.
A Whetstone Evening to celebrate the journal's publication and those who have contributed
to its success is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Wallman Hall Tower Room.
The event is open to the public.
The featured artist is Morgan Martinson, FSU alumna and current Ph.D. candidate in
Architecture at UPenn. West Virginia University's Gail Adams, who is retiring from
a long and distinguished career, is the featured writer. The issue also includes an
interview with FSU's Artist-in-Residence Kathryn Schwille and John Piscitelli's photographs
of set and costume designs for Fairmont State's production of "Wiley and the Hairy
Man." The feature on the WCB Foundation's book by Neshia Bridges chronicling her brother
Will Bridge's life and too-early death is also a first for the journal. The Awards
of Excellence winners are Fairmont State students Anthony Marchese in literature with
his short story "Orion" and Andrew Smith in art for his "Self Portrait 2."
"The energy of the Whetstone staff this year has been palpable: huge thanks to James
Bright, Megan Coleman, Amy Conway, Brionna Harvey, Kimmy Higginbotham, Bruce McGlumphy,
Justin Mitchell, Drew Schiefelbein, Andrew Smith, Ryan Snyder and Rebecca Westwood,"
said Dr. Donna Long, Faculty Advisor for Whetstone.
"Their passion and dedication speaks volumes (pun intended) about the value of Whetstone
for the Fairmont State community. As always, Kevin Smith, Director of Student Publications,
and Tammy Holden, Print Design and Graphic Specialist at Fairmont State, deserve special
mention for their support and expertise. Finally, and most importantly, we thank all
the contributors and everyone who submitted work for this year's issue. Whetstone
cannot happen without them."
