Kids Participate in Ballroom Dancing at Camp

Aug 23, 2006

Children with cancer and hemophilia recently participated in a ballroom dancing course presented by Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College at camps held at the YMCA Camp Horseshoe near Parsons in Tucker County.

The camps, Camp Winaca and Camp Hemovon, are held each year at Camp Horseshoe. Camp Winaca is a week-long program sponsored by the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Michael Fulda, program coordinator, and Mariko Tsuruta, dance team captain, served as the dance instructors. The students were instructed in the cha cha and the waltz. By popular demand, the students also learned some tango steps and stances.

"The instructors were pleased and proud to see how their charges were practicing what they had just learned," Fulda said. "The children and the staff had learned well, but the net gainers of the afternoon were the instructors, for having had the privilege of an unforgettable and uplifting experience."
