Swim Teams Honored for Academics
Fairmont State was one of 252 institutions honored recently by the College Swimming
Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Both the Falcon men and women were honored
as Academic All-American swim teams for their performance in the classroom in the
spring semester of 2006.
The CSCAA honors teams that combine for at least a 2.8 grade point average each semester.
The list is divided into three classifications: commendable (2.8-2.99), excellent
(3.0-3.24) and superior (3.25-above). Both squads finished the semester with a superior
distinction. The men posted a 3.32 GPA, which was good for third of 20 NCAA Division
II men's squads that qualified. The women posted a 3.25 GPA, which was eighteenth
of the 31 Division II teams that qualified.
Former Falcon swimmer, Jason Gallaher's Sweet Briar College women's team led all
divisions with a 3.76 GPA. Other notables with Fairmont State ties are former coach
Ed Denny's California University of Pennsylvania women (23rd on the Division II list)
and former swimmer Andrew Waeger's Lock Haven University women (30th on the Division
II list).
Junior, Matej Tomas, and freshman, Ivan Madolev, were honored individually for their
performances. Tomas was named Academic All-American for the third straight season,
while Madolev was named Honorable Mention Academic All-American. To be named to the
list each of the three times, Tomas needed to qualify for the National Championships
while maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA. Honorable Mention consideration is given to
those who maintain the same GPA, while earning NCAA' qualifying standards. In all,
over 600 collegiate swimmers earned academic accolades from the CSCAA.
