ASCE Sponsors Summer Technical Conference
Fairmont State's American Society of Civil Engineers Student Club in cooperation with
the West Virginia DOT/Division of Highways is sponsoring the fourth annual Summer
Technical Conference on Thursday, June 1. The theme for this year's event is "That
was Then ; This Is Now."
The guest of honor will be Paul A. Mattox, Jr., P.E., Commissioner, West Virginia
DOT/Division of Highways, who will speak about the state's 25-year plan.
The morning session of the conference will feature the following presentations: "The
Transportation Academy at Fairmont State" by Ted Stilgenbauer, Assistant Professor
and Coordinator, Civil Engineering Technology, FSU; "Innovative BMPs for Today's Ever
Increasing Regulation" by Robert R. Connelly, II, CPESC, ACF Environmental; "In the
Midst of Change: The WV PE Board" by Leslie Rosier-Tabor, P.E., Executive Director,
WV PE Board, and Don Johnson, P.E., Board Investigator. The afternoon session will
feature the following presentations: "Professional Registration and Licensing: Evidence
of Demonstrating Competence" by Theodore K. Yoneda, Esq., P.E., Yoneda Legal Services,
PLLC; "The Award Winning Fairmont State ASCE Student Club" by Greg Wilson, Tim Windland
and Marcella Dantzler; "West Virginia Buildings: Preserving Them Now" by Carol Stevens,
P.E., CAS Structural Engineering Inc.; "The Future Vision" by Paul A. Mattox, Jr.,
P.E., Commissioner, West Virginia DOT/Division of Highways.
Those who attend the conference at the FS Falcon Center can earn seven professional
development hours at the discretion of the State Board of Professional Engineers.
The cost is $25 for ASCE student members; $35 for students who are not members of
ASCE; $125 for ASCE professional members; and $150 for professionals who are not members
of ASCE. The cost includes breakfast, lunch and hors d'oeuvres. There is a 15 percent
discount for FS alumni and ASCE officers.

Fairmont State's ASCE Student Club has been rated the Most Outstanding Student Club
by ASCE National in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The FS club also won the regional
concrete canoe competition in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The club will represent the region
at the 2006 National Concrete Canoe Competition in Stillwater, Okla., in June.
