Designer Showcase Features Student Work

Shoppers at Middletown Home Sales will see the results of the practical experience Fairmont State Community & Technical College interior design students have been receiving in choosing color schemes and the right furniture and home interior accessories.

During an open house Designer Showcase at Middletown Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the store's new home lineup for 2005-2006 will feature three homes students have decorated and furnished as part of their applied design practicum.

"It's a good reality check for them," said Angie Retton, the adjunct interior design and fashion instructor who is supervising the practicum. "With this project, they have a budget and a target clientele. It's just like the real world."

Students have spent between 40 and 60 hours on the project since the beginning of the semester designing and decorating the homes.

"They have a floor plan they follow and have done some painting and have also designed all of the color schemes and options," Retton said.

The 12 students will be on hand during the open house to answer questions, which will provide them with some sales experience, in addition to the experience with hands-on design, Retton said.

Melody Gouzd, manager of Middletown Furniture Showcase, said a live remote radio broadcast and refreshments are planned in conjunction with the open house. The public is encouraged to visit the homes and see the students' work that day. Middletown Home Sales is located at 65 Middletown Road in White Hall.

"The students have all worked well together and it's been interesting seeing their style," Gouzd said.
