FS Hosts High School Speech & Debate Tournament
The Fairmont State Forensic and Debate Teams hosted the FS 2005 High School Invitational
Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Tournament events included public speaking, oral interpretation of literature and
debate. The following high schools participated in the tournament: John Marshall,
Braxton County, Parkersburg, Riverside, Wheeling Park, Linsly, Ritchie, Parkersburg
South, East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior.
Several students from local schools placed in the tournament events. The students
from Fairmont Senior High School who placed in the competition were Josh Rosenberg,
first in Extemporaneous Speaker; B. Domico and Anna Simis, third in Dramatic Duo Interpretation;
Jimmy Burdoff, first in After Dinner Speaking; Bobbi Casto, first in Poetry and fourth
in Prose; Nicole Ambrozak, first in Declamation; Trisha O'Dell, third in Declamation,
Valeria Phillips, fourth in Sales Speaking; Anna Simis, second in Dramatic and Humorous
Interp; Michael Perry, third in Dramatic and Humorous Interp; and Reggie Jose, sixth
in Dramatic and Humorous Interp. Mollie Simis placed third in Student Congress. Laura
Burgher and Jacqueline Burgher won first place in policy debate. Fairmont Senior High
School is coached by Cathy Raspa and Linda Pinnell. FS Oral Communication students
Hannah Barnes, Roger Banks and Chris Sharps assist with the team.
The students from East Fairmont High School who placed in the tournament were Amber
Eakins, third place in Impromptu Speaking, and Dominick Pellegrin, fourth place in
Student Congress. The East Fairmont team is coached by Xavier Garcia.
Faculty and students from the FSU Speech & Theatre Department and the Department
of Language & Literature served as judges for the event. The Fairmont State teams
are coached by Dr. Bob Mild (public speaking), Kim Korcsmaros (debate) and Dr. Francene
Kirk (oral interpretation.)
