The Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of a student's educational expenses. The COA includes estimates for direct and indirect educational expenses. Your final cost will vary depending on your residency, major, course selection, housing, and food plan selections.
Estimated Direct (Billable) Costs are those paid to the university such as tuition and fees; also housing and food if living in a residence hall.
Your final costs will be available on your billing statement approximately one month before the start of the semester and once you are registered for courses. A billing statement is generated for each semester and will be approximately half of the annual amount listed below. To view your billing statement, log into your myFairmontState account, navigate to the Quick Links section, and select Pay/View My Bill.
Estimated Indirect (Non-Billable) Costs are other expenses you may have during the academic year. Indirect costs include variable expenses such as rent, books, supplies, materials, and miscellaneous personal, or transportation expenses
How is The Estimated Cost of Attendance Calculated?
- Tuition & Fees: The base cost of classes, which varies for in-state and out-of-state students. The estimate assumes full-time enrollment in fall and spring semesters.
- Program & Course Fees: Additional fees based on the average cost for a full-time student taking on-campus classes.
- Housing & Food: Estimated based on the selection on your admissions application or previous year
housing selection. You are only billed for housing and food if you select a residence
hall and meal plan. All food estimates cover three meals per day.
- At Home: An estimate to cover basic living expenses a student living with a relative.
- On Campus: Based on the median residence hall cost. Your actual cost will depend on your specific housing and meal plan selections.
- Off Campus: An estimated cost of rent and utilities for students living off campus.
- Books, Supplies, & Materials: An estimate of textbooks, course materials, and supplies for full-time enrollment.
- Personal: Estimated costs for everyday needs such as clothing, hygiene products, and other miscellaneous expenses.
- Transportation: Covers travel expenses to and from class, work, and home.
