As I have settled in at Fairmont State University one this has become abundant clear to me – the moment of the regional public university is upon us. What students, communities, employers, and external partners want now more than ever are genuine education partners who are nimble, innovative and prepared to meet the challenges that lie in front of us. The regional public university, generally, and Fairmont State University, specifically, are up to the challenge.

When my family and I decided the time was right to explore leadership positions in higher education, I knew the kind of school I wanted to lead. And when I first saw the announcement that Fairmont State University was looking for a new president, I told them: “This is the one!”

It was a rainy week, to say the least, but Fairmont State University was shining brighter than ever this afternoon as the Inauguration of its new President took place.
Fairmont State University officially inaugurated its 27th president, Mike Davis on Thursday after he officially stepped into the role in July 2023.
Fairmont State University inaugurated its new president Thursday. Mike Davis has held the position since last July, but he was formally invested as president Thursday evening, formally conferring the authority and symbols of the office to him.
When I interviewed to be the president at Fairmont State University, I was asked several times “Why do you want to be president at Fairmont State?” Honestly, it was a hard question to answer. As I prepared for my interview, I explored everything I could about the University, its programs, and its people. And the more I discovered, the more I got the feeling that there was something truly special here, something I could not quite put into words. So, in my interview, I said things like “I want to have an impact on student, faculty and staff success,” or “I want to be a voice for higher education in a world that is increasingly hostile to it.”
In the nine months since taking office as president, Dr. Davis said the community has been helpful and accommodating to him and his family. Davis said the outpouring of support has included personal invitations to people’s homes, cheat sheets on important community facts, dinner reservations. It’s a feeling of belonging that Davis has appreciated the most.
