Fairmont State Forensic Science Program to Host 'Kickin it for Katy' 5K

Feb 15, 2022

The Fairmont State University Forensic Science Program will host the ‘Kickin it for Katy’ 5K run and walk on Saturday, April 2 on the University’s campus. All proceeds from the races will go to the Kaitlynn Towson Forensic Memorial Award to raise awareness around suicide prevention, benefitting Fairmont State students enrolled in the Forensic Science program.

“Students are struggling trying to manage all sorts of stressors like work, family dynamic issues and money in addition to attending college," said Fairmont State Forensic Science Program Coordinator, Dr. Mark Flood. "It is so critical for our students to feel supported and manage their responses to their stressors so that they never get to the point of losing hope. We are hopeful that by remembering Katy’s story we can help our future students to understand when they need to seek help.”

The Forensic Science program is currently seeking race sponsorships to defray operating expenses for the event. There are various sponsorship levels available, ranging from a platinum level to water station sponsors. Any additional funds secured from event sponsorships will go toward the event fundraising goal.

Race preregistration is open until March 1 for $20. All participants preregistered will receive an event t-shirt on the day of the races. Those wishing to register after the preregistration deadline may do so until April 1 for $25.

“The Kickin it for Katy 5K will be a fun, but also vitally important, event,” said Fairmont State University President, Dr. Mirta M. Martin. “As this long, cold winter recedes, we’ll be eager to return to outdoor pursuits, and this race represents a chance to get out in the sun and join our community in raising funds for a most worthy cause. The proceeds from this race will augment the Kaitlynn Towson Forensic Memorial Award, demonstrating Fairmont State’s commitment not only to our students, but also to our entire community’s health and wellness.”
