Masters Degree in Leadership Studies Offered
Certified public school teachers interested in becoming principals can receive the
training they need through Fairmont State University's new Masters of Education Degree
in Leadership Studies. Working in collaboration with Marshall University, FSU would
like to recruit students for the new program of study, which will begin with the fall
2005 semester.
The entirely web-based curriculum featuring 18 hours of leadership studies courses
and 18 hours of general education courses will be administered on the Fairmont State
campus. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be qualified for certification
as pre-K through adult school principals in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
"We at FSU are very excited to be able to offer this new master's degree program
in collaboration with Marshall," said Dr. Don Moroose, Associate Dean of Education
for Graduate Studies and Clinical Experiences. "We feel the online availability of
classes for this program and the flexibility in scheduling it provides will help working
teachers to be successful in balancing their many responsibilities. FSU has a long
history as a leader in the field of teacher education, and we take pride in the personal
attention we are able to give our students."
In addition to the new Leadership Studies program, FSU offers a Master of Education
degree in four other areas of emphasis: Professional Studies, Special Education, Special
Education Only and Online Learning. The emphasis in Professional Studies is designed
for teachers who do not wish to add an additional teaching specialization. It is for
those teaching professionals who wish to pursue a graduate degree. The emphasis in
Special Education is designed as an option for elementary and secondary teachers who
are currently certified. The emphasis in Special Education Only is designed as an
option for those who currently hold a four-year non-teaching baccalaureate degree
and wish to teach Special Education Only in K-adult schools. The emphasis in Online
Learning is unique in that course work is designed for faculty, administrators and
staff members interested in making online teaching an important part of their academic
careers or those who wish to take a leadership role in online learning at their institutions.
More than 350 students are currently enrolled in these programs, which also offer
many online courses.
