Two spring commencement ceremonies to be held May 12

Mar 28, 2018

With shrinking budgets in mind, many institutions have been cutting back on commencement ceremonies and forcing students to choose just a few people to experience their special day. Fairmont State University is looking to change that trend. On Saturday, May 12 two commencement ceremonies will be held in order to better serve graduating students.

“In an effort to celebrate the achievements of our students, we want to ensure all relatives, friends, and community members can join us,” said President Mirta Martin. “As attendance rises we were left with a choice--either restrict the number of guests to two or double our capacity with a second ceremony. Fairmont State students are not just a number to us and we had to ensure they didn’t feel that way on their graduation day.”

In this historic move, graduates will be assigned to a ceremony based on their major. Graduates in the college of liberal arts including master of science; school of nursing; school of fine arts; and regents bachelor of arts will participate in the morning ceremony which begins at 10 a.m. in the Feaster Center.

College of science and technology including master of architecture; school of business including master of business administration; and school of education including master of arts in teaching and master of education graduates will participate in the afternoon ceremony which begins at 4 p.m. in the Feaster Center.

In addition to adding a second spring ceremony, Fairmont State will once again hold a winter commencement this December.

“As I talk with our students and alumni, it is clear that a winter ceremony is important. Each of our students is important to us and their journey should be honored. I look forward to holding a winter commencement again and celebrating with our graduates in a timely manner.”

Students who graduated at the completion of the fall 2017 term are welcome to participate in the spring ceremonies. Any student wishing to participate can e-mail graduation@fairmontstate.edu or call (304) 367-4659.
