Fairmont State Architecture Students Awarded Scholarships from the AIAWV

Jan 31, 2022

Fairmont State University architecture students, Mary Pierson-Escalona and Chloe Wean, were awarded scholarships from the West Virginia American Institute of Architects in late 2021.

Each year the AIA provides a scholarship to a senior and junior architecture student for their outstanding work on a project completed over the course of a semester. Seven projects were selected this year, and the finalists presented virtually to the selection committee in early December.

Mary Pierson-Escalona, a senior from Ripley, WV, was awarded the Jeffrey Mayfield Scholarship with her proposal for a new Fire Station in Pleasant Valley, WV. Jurors complimented her on the graceful articulation of the overall form and arrangement of spaces.

Chloe Wean, a junior from Fairmont, was awarded the AIAWV Scholarship for her work on a farm-to-table restaurant and gardens located in Pittsburgh, PA. The small greenhouse built into the restaurant and her overall concept juxtaposing industry and agriculture, with modern versus traditional materials was highlighted in the jurors’ review of her work.

“Fairmont State’s architecture program is one of a kind in the state of West Virginia,” said Fairmont State University President, Mirta M. Martin. “The program is also special because of our extraordinary teacher-mentors, and amazing home-grown talent like Mary and Chloe. We’re so proud of these two young women. We look forward to watching them grow, and, when they graduate, we’re eager to see the contributions they’ll make to communities as professional architects.”
